LeConte 1823-1901 Medical doctor, Professor, Mentor, and Author - Joseph LeConte spent his early years in Georgia where he developed his love of nature wandering the woods and meadows. Although a doctor, LeConte changed his professional course to pursue his passion of geology. After the Civil War ended, LeConte joined the faculty at the University of California in 1869. LeConte has nearly 200 publications to his name and was held in high esteem. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and served as president of American Association for Advancement of Science and for the Geological Society of America. LeConte could captivate and inspire students and comrades alike with his stories and lectures on the natural world. An avid camper, he often took trips into the Sierra Nevada Mountains frequently accompanied by his friend, John Muir.
